Ken Okada Group ft. YOYOKA is back with “Last Serenade,” a wonderful, great song from their third studio album titled “Crossing Over.” The song steers the group firmly into present-day jazz fusion territory by pairing intricate rhythms with 21st-century instinctive spirit.
Murray Low’s montuno-driven piano work locks the rhythm section in place. The piece expands with bold tenor saxes from Ben Torres and supple, embroidered guitars from Hristo Vitchev. YOYOKA delivers an exciting main drum solo, but her talents and maturity never disrupt the song’s momentum.
This results in a slightly generic yet very well-composed fusion piece that balances technical proficiency with accessibility. “Last Serenade” is a modern jazz masterwork that illustrates the group’s seamless balance of simplicity and contemporary jazz craft. The intricacies of this single’s rhythmic fabric and its engaging interplay give “Crossing Over” additional artistic weight, making it a key release in contemporary global jazz fusion.
