A hard-edged banjo riff introduces a story that spans more than one life. “Last Life,” a dark, atmospheric Americana that blends indie-roots energy with a mystical exploration of connection, mortality, and devotion, marks the solo debut of songwriter, vocalist, and Franklin Gotham co-founder Kev Adkins.
The song is largely about two souls meeting through lifetimes, giving it a timeless emotional perspective. “Last Life” explores devotion and the possibility of an attachment that goes beyond the limits of the normal human narrative. The concept fits the song’s dark-country and folk-rock influences, where down-to-earth musicality meets an atmospheric story.
The arrangement is centered around a raw, trance-inducing banjo riff, with spirited indie-roots instrumentation underpinning the tune. Adkins draws on his background with Franklin Gotham and Celtic-rock outfit Icewagon Flu, bringing those experiences into a solo release that also incorporates contemporary indie-pop influences.
The single was written with long-time collaborator Jarrett Nicolay and UK producer Adam James. The handmade claymation teaser that accompanies it brings the song’s mysterious, cinematic feel to life visually, deepening the story’s mystery. The song pulls you into a world where devotion is bigger than the moment, and connection is bigger than a single lifetime.
