One flower can start a whole song, and for Dan Whitehouse, it began with a morning walk near Barcelona, where the striking shape and color of a Strelitzia, commonly known as “Bird of Paradise,” sparked a conversation about beauty, desire, and how attractive things can become when they turn into objects of consumption.
That conversation with longtime collaborator Jason Tarver eventually blossomed into “Bird of Paradise,” the opening track of Whitehouse’s album, “Only Love.” The song reflects on the meeting point of natural beauty and human desire, and what happens when beauty becomes something society wants to possess or commodify.
Whitehouse and Tarver have worked together for many years and always begin their session with a walk when they meet at Tarver’s place. The first spark came from the environment, and then the conversation moved into the studio. “Bird of Paradise“ connects an everyday observation to a larger cultural question. The result is a song grounded in nature but focused on human behavior, desire, and the complex ways people respond to beauty.
