The ocean is a powerful metaphor for emotions, and rarely are they calm. “WORDLESS” features Ania Vena’s original solo piano composition, “Give it to the Sea,” which explores that connection. The work draws on contemporary neoclassical music and is inspired by Vincent van Gogh’s comparison of the human heart to the sea; both contain storms, tides, and unexpected treasures beneath the surface.

The instrumental suggests the heart is a battlefield where conflicting experiences fight it out. It explores confusion, emotional turmoil, peace, and the lessons that make the bad times worth it. Vena uses the piano itself to express the composition’s emotional direction, rather than lyrics to explain these ideas.

The solo piano form always keeps the connection between sound and feeling in mind. It lets you bring your own experience to it and find meaning in the relationship between the sea’s changing nature and the complex nature of being human. “Give it to the Sea” is also a piece of “WORDLESS,” and is an example of how music without words can be used to tell a story without a word being written.

Ania Vena turns a simple nature analogy into a considered musical idea, and “Give it to the Sea” shows us how life’s hardships and its hidden beauty can run parallel, like the changing waters that inspired the piece.
