It’s been ten years since Charlie Cunningham dropped “Lines,” and he revisits a tune that helped define his early musical journey with “An Opening (with strings).” The new interpretation was recorded at London’s legendary RAK Studios, offering a fresh take on the track while keeping the original’s quiet intensity.
At the core of this new version is an intimate string arrangement by Amy Langley, performed with The Nite Orchestra. The strings add a new dimension to Cunningham’s acoustic folk and indie folk foundation, reimagining the song without losing the subtlety that made it important within “Lines.”
In “An Opening (with strings),“ we don’t get a complete departure from the defining qualities of the earlier recording. Instead, the new arrangement offers a different way to experience the composition, letting its emotional atmosphere build in a different instrumental setting.
Cunningham revisits the record that introduced him to audiences worldwide, but he does so with a newly captured performance rather than simply looking back. “An Opening (with strings)” seems to be a meeting point between Cunningham’s established acoustic identity and a richer orchestral perspective.
