Life doesn’t always give us a chance to see what’s just around the next bend, and Stephanie Phillips uses that uncomfortable fact as the foundation for “Try As We Might.” In the indie folk ballad, the emotional weight of trying to fix relationships and difficult situations while slowly realizing that some outcomes are still out of our control.

“Try As We Might” meditates on our desire to know what will happen next, even when life doesn’t give us an answer. Its message is that this uncertainty is like forces we cannot control, but challenges that require the courage to keep our balance and keep going.

The song is the first single from Phillips’ new album, “Walking the Tightrope,” written out of a very shaky time in her life when her brother was dying of cancer, and she was about to marry the person she loved, who is now her second husband. Those two realities, which are grief and new beginnings, created a sharp emotional tension.

“Try As We Might” knows that we want to know what’s next, and it knows that life doesn’t work that way. The result is an intimate indie-folk meditation on uncertainty, courage, love, loss, and moving on.
