Christian Welde’s new release, “The Sky Above Us,” is a great musical milestone. Welde, familiar here from his earlier ambient synth work, goes for a more organic sound, structuring the instrumental around guitars, live drums, electric bass, keyboards, sax, French horn, and voice.

While it’s probably not a typical vocal song, Kirsten Jørgensen’s voice adds another human touch. It began as a piano idea and grew into something much bigger. The track is a huge, emotionally rich soundscape where the guitars eventually take center stage. Jørgensen’s contribution to that instrumental setting is especially noteworthy.

“The Sky Above Us” has a cinematic quality, with instrumentation and atmospheric keyboards, but it still keeps its instrumental core. Welde moves from one established approach to another, and “The Sky Above Us“ captures that transition with a more organic palette and a larger ensemble. This is a sprawling bit of work, each instrument adding its own emotional character to the whole.
