Jenny Gillespie Mason is back with “Rungs of Love,” a reflective folk song that introduces her forthcoming record, “In the Safety of the Light.” Produced by Noah Georgeson, it gives the song a polished brush that roots it in the introspective, spiritually minded folk tradition.

The single feels both intentional and wholly personal in its renewal, written on a 1976 Martin guitar after taking some time away from songwriting altogether. “Rungs of Love” is about love and its evolution, as inspired by Mother Mirra Alfassa. Mason straddles the line between human and divine throughout, organizing the song to shift with ease between romantic reverie and higher devotion.

Mason’s vocal performance is airy and raw, in tune with the song’s genuineness and the traditions of Bert Jansch and Vashti Bunyan. All the organic layering is credited to Georgeson, who ensures that the instrumentation never distracts from the emotional heart of the song. “Rungs of Love” is a powerful statement, reasserting Mason’s confidence as an artist and folk music’s enduring power, its capacity for spiritual inquiry, and its capacity for emotional exploration.
