Some classics are known to every generation, but a new recording can draw the listener in with a fresh kind of attention. Laudinum presents ‘The Swan,” a modern reinterpretation of Camille Saint-Saëns’s classic, featuring Cécile Lacharme on cello. This is the third in Laudinum’s Past Masters series, an attempt to bring the classics into the modern listening environment.

During Camille Saint-Saëns’s lifetime, he allowed the piece “The Swan,” from Le Carnaval des animaux, to be performed in public only once. He prohibited its public performance in its entirety until his death, and it was not published in full until 1922. The history places it in a special position in his catalog, and its popularity shows how a single movement can take on an identity of its own. Laudinum’s recording taps into that musical heritage without making the piece sound like something from the past.

This modern production aims to respect the composition as conceived and give it more space to be heard. Recorded and mixed at Abbey Road Studios, it is a traditional composition with a modern production feel. The cover art is Alexander Pope’s 1900 painting “The Wild Swan,” showcasing a union of performance, production, and visual choice. Laudinum’s take recognizes the Saint-Saëns composition but lets us linger over its details and feel the continued life of a work that has survived for generations.
