“I Walked by a Bar” by X-Rated Cowboys exemplifies that philosophy and runs with it, deep into roots rock and alt-country. The song is the first single from a band that captures the album’s raucous spirit. It comes in hot, meant to make a statement right out of the gate.
The concept is based on shout-outs to classic bands and songs. “I Walked by a Bar“ sounds musically comfortable, tying its persona to the traditions that made its world, without losing the song’s irreverence. Dan Baird makes a worthwhile contribution on vocals and guitar. It’s a duet of old friends, adding another layer of shared energy and familiarity to the show.
The roots-rock/alt-country combo fits the song’s style, and this is about the spirit of a band that clearly enjoys pushing up toward polite expectation. “I Walked by a Bar” is a prologue to that bigger personality. X-Rated Cowboys’ new single is a collision of classic touchstones, friendship, and a refusal to take the respectable route.
