With “I Hung My Head,” Backsprint takes on the classic with confidence but also with the emotional weight that has allowed it to live on across generations. Initially written by Sting, the song has already had a few remarkable lives through memorable renditions, but this version finds its own identity by blending country rock and Americana.
Backsprint is a full-band with steady rhythms and a more forceful vocal delivery, eschewing the stripped-back feel of earlier acoustic takes. It’s the same familiar story, a young man awaiting his fate in the wake of a tragic accident, but the band’s approach gives fresh momentum without losing the weight of the story.
Uroš Jojić’s vocals are frantic, and his harmonica lends a unique Americana feel. Expressive guitar parts by Ognjen Ninković and Aleksandar Petrović, grounded bass lines by Nemanja Cvijović, and disciplined drumming by Marko Kuzmanović give the arrangement a rock edge. All performances are cohesive and purposeful under Oliver Jovanović’s production.
The reason this recording is so compelling is that it pays tribute to the songwriting, but it will not be a replica. Backsprint doesn’t shy away from the emotional tension, and the timeless story shines through through a modern country-rock perspective that’s powerful, cinematic, and undeniably their own.
