The latest single released from Japanese artist Yusuke Ito (伊藤 佑輔)’s 13-track concept album “Butterfly Reveries” is “Burning Bridge.” The album is based on the “Butterfly Dream” of Zhuangzi, a philosophical text about the dissolution and return of a soul to earth.

The track drifts through a thick scene of 1980s industrial beats and new wave sounds. Each layer adds to the nature of the track, and the arrangement keeps the tension from start to finish. The vocal delivery shifts throughout the track from singing to a spoken word section that forms the heart of the song’s theme

This keeps you on the edge of your seat, and it intensifies the dichotomy that the song is built on, to draw a line between self and other. “Burning Bridge” is certainly part of the post-punk conversation today. Its philosophical roots give it a dimension beyond the pure sound. This is a record that demands something of you, and that’s what makes it matter.
