Beaver Feet’s new single, “Hurricane’s Under Blue Skies,” is a meditation on the contradiction of looking calm on the outside while feeling like a mess on the inside. The song came from an acoustic guitar jam around a late-night fire, inspired by yacht rock.
The theme is really the difference between what people put out to the world and what they may be going through in private. Hurricanes are disguised chaos, and blue heavens are still or a mirage of peace. These images show a stark emotional contradiction: feeling like you’re doing well while dealing with difficulties others cannot see.
The song opens with a campfire acoustic-guitar jam that feels personal from the start, and its indie-rock and yacht-rock influences suggest the same musical direction as the last song. The intimate moment of creation meets a warm, sun-drenched sound, an interesting counterpoint to the song’s emotional tension.
“Hurricane’s Under Blue Skies” is a study of the inscrutability of appearances, and how hard it can be to know what a person might have inside. The upshot is to encourage a more reflective stance, just because things are settled on the outside doesn’t mean they are settled on the inside.
