Andrei Marian returns with “Ethics Unimposed,” a more polished, vibraphone-centric jazz trio release composed without imposition. Based on compositions written several years earlier, remixed with today’s perspective, this record begins as a quick one, tethering how a previous purpose becomes the basis for the current artistic agency.
The production delivers a clear, spacious sound, allowing every instrument to make its mark. Marian is precise but expressive on the vibes, leading the harmonic direction. Drummer Alex Zavalii provides a breakthrough momentum, and his playing gives palpable, responsive life to what could have become merely an idea. Ion Virlan’s bass work is intimately interwoven with the whole process, forming an organic part of the trio.
“Ethics Unimposed” revels in restraint and interplay. This is an advanced use of the jazz language to embellish an idea, as evolution happens on the fringes rather than through overt complexity. “Ethics Unimposed” serves as a timely reminder that, in looking back, there is something uniquely futurist and permanent.
