This is “Empathy for the Night Fly,” the first track off the EP “Signals in the Dark” by E.G. Phillips. The jazz piece begins with a subdued tone, constructed on an arpeggiating Rhodes piano that fades in and out deliberately. The track creates a sense of concentration, as if time itself slows down in a low-light space.
The arrangement situates each sound to create tension through restraint. There is something deliberate about this approach, and it is indicative of a larger trend in jazz where atmosphere is as important as melody or rhythm. E.G. Phillips’ delivery is woven into the instrumental texture rather than imposed upon it.
Lucas Davis’ trumpet offers emotional lifts, and Bryan Horne’s bass a steady grounding pulse. The electric guitar by Christopher Fortier adds edges that deepen the palette of this track and lend it a cinematic depth. The track is a first statement for “Signals in the Dark,” an artistic intent based on patience and control. The result is a composition that lingers after its runtime, solidifying E.G. Phillips’ take on contemporary jazz.
