A decade of creative quiet has been broken, the spirit louder, the heart richer, the bond tighter. Lost & Profound’s new single, “Mute,” is far from silent. It’s a glistening reintroduction to the indie-folk-rock duo’s poetic soul, the result of a period of deep reflection and latent creativity prevailing over a time of upheaval and resilience.

At one time, the artists Lisa Boudreau and Terry Tompkins resided in New Brunswick and encountered a creative block that would hold their collaboration steady for years to come. Both continued on their creative journey. Lisa is a voice actor and in-demand talent, and Terry is an Emmy-winning composer. However, the L&P endeavor fell by the wayside, becoming a category of wallflowers. But just as the tide comes back to shore, some things are meant to come full circle. “Mute” marks that long-awaited return.

It feels like a gentle wind through familiar woods, new, but rooted. It bears the accumulated emotional and artistic wisdom of two people who have gone off, lived, grown, and reunited, now standing together once more, sharing, making, from a place of mutual love and respect. There is such magic in the way Lisa’s emotive vocals soar over Terry’s elaborate instrumentation that gives the listeners a sense of openness and strength. Helmed by their world-class composer and engineer son, Jody Tompkins, and mixed by renowned Toronto mix engineer Jason Dufour, “Mute” is a family affair and a stunning reminder of the creative twinkle in the eyes of this decades-old musical entity.

A chapter, Lisa says, that is about rebirth, influenced by the serenity of life on a river and starry nights. It’s easy to hear that in the song’s sweeping, contemplative mood. In the meantime, Terry notes a new rhythm in their artistic collaboration, a sign that time apart can occasionally yield the richest soil for something new to flourish. “Mute” is about what still needs to be said. And Lost & Profound say it with grace, wisdom, and undeniable musical chemistry. And, for fans new and old, it’s a potent starting point.
