New Dutch band Secret Molecules serves us something distinctly human with their latest tune, “Dream little Lies.” Rooted in power pop rock and blooming with emotional layers, the song is an honest, joy-fueled reflection from a band of seasoned souls who know their way around a melody and a moment.

Secret Molecules is a unit of the Dordrecht-veteran musicians just south of Rotterdam. At its heart are Otto van Gemert (vocals/guitar), Casper Rosenquist (drums), and Ton van der Kolk (bass), who together create the song’s deep, infectious groove. But “Dream little Lies” is no three-chord miracle. From Eefje Mesker’s velvet harmonies to Govert van der Kolk’s Hammond organ quietly warming things up, even the superfluous elements are really there to create depth, not decoration.

What starts as a sparkly tribute to sound reveals a more contemplative temperament. Joy, a love of music threaded through all the notes, but also sadness and a kind of solemn wonderment woven into ways that are at once personal and universally recognizable. “Dream little Lies ” explores the notion that we all literally, figuratively, incessantly dream our lives” to escape, to make sense, or just to feel alive. The title itself indicates the tender embrace of our inner fictions, tied as it is to a tune you can hum for days.

In the end, Secret Molecules might be new to the game, but “Dream little Lies” shows that they have a wealth of experience as storytellers behind them, both musically and emotionally. This gentle entreaty is to dream a little deeper, go a little darker, and lie a little sweeter.
