Young Thad F’s “Skiddie Scat“ is a confident and fiery Hip-Hop declaration that begins with recognition and celebration, giving them the courage of their convictions. This three-track EP aims to honor those who have helped Black people progress, and it is, in equal parts, a homage and an affirmation.
Every song on the EP is crucial on its own, but together they fill in gaps and make a whole. “Skiddie Scat“ channels that into a solid delivery and an earnest attempt at writing good lyrics. It’s obvious that Thad is proud of those instrumentals, and he has every reason to be. Recorded at Creation Station Studio with M. Keys, the production has a sense of depth and atmosphere.
The soundtrack conjures the grit and brawn of “The 54,“ the smoky haze of dimly lit dressing rooms that remind us of stories about the Cotton Club. The music is purposefully cinematic and never loses its streetwise authenticity. Even moments of heartbreak that were never supposed to occur, as in “3Me’s,” fall within the project’s emotional scope. “Skiddie Scat” is about recognition at the most elementary level, recognizing achievement, honoring progress, and celebrating strength.
Young Thad F steps up to the mic with a clear, concise effort of heartfully considerate rhymes. It’s an EP and a collection of songs, but each song stands on its own. That balance between the artist and engineer in that song shows just how well they work together when both have a vision. Young Thad F’s “Skiddie Scat” proves he remains as committed to culture, legacy, and strong lyrics. The project feels both contemporary and classic.
