Manchester’s indie mercenaries, Florentenes, are amping the heat with their new single, “Fuel For The Flame.” Diving further into the experimental side of their sound, this follows from the release of the first single from their forthcoming sophomore EP, “HOMEGROWN,” which drops on 16 May 2025.
With a visceral kick of immediacy and energy from its first chords, “Fuel For The Flame” is that kind of song. It’s a song that sears, echoing the raw heat of frontman William Smith’s songwriting. Written at 16, the song expresses raw teenage angst and self-exploration. The song was a long obscured gem in the band’s cupboard before now, and its official release is a monumental occasion for the band and fans alike.
There’s an unmistakable influence stitched into the seams, soaring guitar solos, haunting melodies, and a rhythm section that thumps like a heartbeat racing toward something monumental. However, the backbone of the tune is the chemistry between Luke Holding (lead guitar), Harry Stubbs (bass), and Liam Fiddy (drums), which swells Smith’s impassioned vocals into a cathartic, anthemic explosion.
Though “Fuel For The Flame” is intensely personal, it’s also universal. That shopworn feeling of wanting to escape, to muscle against the weight of expectation, to find a seed of meaning in the tumult of youth summated in a sound that demands to be felt as much as it’s heard.
With”HOMEGROWN” coming down the pike, the Florentenes are showing themselves as a band with something to say, and more than enough firepower to ensure it’s heard. If this single is anything to go by, their forthcoming EP will be a riotous statement, enhancing their credentials as one of the most exhilarating new acts of the year.
