Sky Canyon presents “Equinox,” a reflective re-imagining of the classic jazz composition, first recorded by John Coltrane in 1960 and released in 1964. Sky Canyon approaches the piece with true respect, while adding a new perspective that reflects his own musical identity.

The source of inspiration for the composition adds yet another layer of meaning. The title was proposed by Coltrane’s wife, who noted that his birthday was September 23, the day of the autumn equinox, an idea that even affected the original visual presentation of the work. Sky Canyon carries on that legacy, but lets the emotional depth of the composition shine through in a polished and modern performance.

The ensemble is superb, and this enhances the recording. Eric Gunnison provides expressive musical support, Ron Bland (upright bass) and Mike Marlier (drums) deliver performances full of movement, balance, and subtle energy. They combine to form a rich bedrock from which each phrase can breathe freely. The production is warm, organic, and true to the spirit of acoustic jazz, allowing each instrument to shine without overpowering the arrangement. On “Equinox,” Sky Canyon shows that great jazz standards are still evolving in the right hands.
