Big Space returns with “Always Been There,” the second single from their upcoming album, “Pendulum Effect,” which will be released on June 5 on vinyl, CD, and digital formats. The song features a 3/4-time modern jazz guitar trio ballad defined by lyrical guitar phrasing and some understated ensemble interplay.
The gradual unfolding of the composition, with space and dynamics defining its emotional shape. The guitar playing is similarly reminiscent of the sympathetic hearing-in-tones of Bill Frisell and Julian Lage, a mixture of direct note phrases and gentle harmonic shifting. The rhythm section sets the tone with measured precision, yielding a sense of responsiveness over rigidity.
The recording was mixed by Brett Bullion and mastered by Nate Wood, resulting in greater smoothness, depth, and separation. It gives the band a more cohesive sound as each instrument occupies space in a very purposeful manner. The ultimate thing is a combination of assuredness and meekness, and it serves to solidify Big Space’s position in contemporary jazz.
