Hari Vasan’s latest release, “The Experiment,” is an Americana-folk song that connects a personal story to a larger idea about the country’s unfinished journey toward multiracial democracy. The story is about who can feel fully American.
The song was written in the wake of George Floyd’s murder and the racial reckoning that followed, and is about Vasan’s experience as the son of an immigrant fighting to be seen as American. Its title acknowledges that America is an experiment in building a real multiracial democracy, giving the song a thematic backbone.
“The Experiment” ties the bigger question of belonging to Vasan’s personal experience as the son of immigrants. Evan Kornblum, a two-time WTMD Baker Grant recipient, produced the track, and it boasts a wide credited lineup. Piano by Jason Schoenfeld, drums by Chris Pierorazio, bass by Jay Turner, cello by Ken James Kubota, and banjo by Berman.
These instruments form the musical bedrock of Vasan’s Americana, folk approach. Together they lend the release a thoughtful, purposeful character. “The Experiment“ is a personal story that delves into belonging, identity, and an unfinished national idea.
