Eylsia Nicolas’s new release, “If You Were Here,” is a meaningful rebuilding story. It comes after a period of losing part of her lung capacity and damage to her vocal cords, making singing impossible. Her R&D team had been working on 3D spatial audio and restoration technology, and with a long recovery, Nicolas was able to reconstruct enough of her voice to make music again.
The song is context, not definition, for the journey, and “If You Were Here“ is a return to the creative scene and a continuation of a musical journey that has captured the hearts of fans, especially in Asia. The track itself is still basically contemporary pop, but Nicolas’s wider artistic approach is an exploration of languages and orchestral styles. The openness of the release has a sense of creative possibility, especially on the return of an artist to music.
What’s most interesting about “If You Were Here“ is its connection to persistence. It is the possibility to sing again when there was no way to sing, and it is a tribute to those who, in their willingness to hear the music, helped forge a way forward.
