With the count down to zero, Zachary Mason propels himself into a new artistic orbit with “5…4…3…2…1,” the opening salvo from his new EP of the same name. Mixing psychedelic textures with a rock energy that’s both boisterous and profound, Mason turns a cosmic concept into something that is both humorous and profoundly human.

What’s as interesting as the soundscape of the track is its narrative of men, unable to save a dying Earth, who swarm to Mars in search of a fresh start. But glittering with all its sci-fi allure is a meditation on our never-ending search for rebirth as human beings.

Nate Barnes of the critically lauded rock band, Rose Hill Drive, is on drums with thunderous playing, and John Thomasson hooks the whole thing up on bass (Little Big Town), providing groove and weight. The song was mixed and mastered by Derrick Lin, every detail punching through with clarity and intent.

Initially recorded in early 2023, “5…4…3…2…1…” kick-started Mason’s most extended and most expansive release to date. The production is a heady whirl of color and motion, possessed by a compelling energy that echoes the rush of lift-off. Zachary Mason, with an eye for humor and a heart full of wonder, opens your mind to the mythic possibilities.
