A prominent criminal defense attorney who repped a defendant in the high-profile YSL RICO case finds herself on the wrong side of the law. On Monday, a Fulton County grand jury returned an indictment against Nicole Fegan, accusing her of a host of crimes linked to drug trafficking and gang activity. Fegan’s case is considered somewhat unusual, as she’s accused of using her position as an attorney to facilitate the operation of a criminal enterprise connected to a client she represented, Tenquarius Mender, who is currently serving time in prison.

Prosecutors say Fegan used her job to help Mender’s illegal activities, which they say specialized in trafficking crystal meth, possessing and distributing drugs, and being involved with a criminal street gang. The charges against her are wide-ranging and include everything from possession of marijuana to a violation of Georgia’s Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act. Another shocking claim comes against Fegan for allegedly tipping off a fugitive about the damning evidence, also advising several suspects to get rid of their cell phones in a ploy to prevent justice. If actual, such conduct would flagrantly violate both professional and legal duties imposed on defense counsel.

Fegan’s attorney, Drew Findling, is already calling foul on the indictment, branding it an “absolute travesty.” Findling angrily defends his client, arguing that they are charged up about something nobody else gives a damn about, and that these very same charges stem from events that took place more than two years ago during the YSL trial. Fegan “was a zealous advocate for her client, no more,” Findling said.

This is bad news for the legal community, and it’s especially awful coming from the mouth of one whose reputation is that of a bulldog in the courtroom. As the case unfolds, the legal world will be watching with interest to witness this new twist in the plot. Whether Fegan’s reputation as a highly regarded criminal defense attorney can survive these allegations is another question. In the meantime, she must defend herself against charges that portray her professional behavior in a far different light.
