Ty Dolla $ign has officially stepped away from a messy legal battle involving copyright issues related to his collaborative album, “Vultures 1,” with Kanye West, allowing Kanye to face the situation on his own. The lawsuit focuses on a sample used in the song “Fuk Sumn,” which the plaintiffs claim was used without permission. Ty Dolla $ign has reached a preliminary settlement, which removes him from the lawsuit.
The lawsuit was filed by Memphis rap artists Criminal Manne, DJ Squeeky, and the estate of the late Kilo G. They allege that their 1994 song “Drink a Yak (Part 2)” was sampled without their approval, claiming that “Fuk Sumn” contains several unauthorized elements from their original track. According to new court documents, the attorneys for the Memphis trio mentioned that “the parties have resolved their differences” and are working on a confidential agreement with Ty Dolla $ign.

While Ty is no longer part of the lawsuit, the fight isn’t over yet. Kanye West, also known as Ye, is still facing the allegations alongside his record label, Yeezy Records LLC. Details about the settlement with Ty haven’t been made public, but the plaintiffs are no longer seeking damages from him. However, they continue to pursue their claims against West, accusing him of apparent copyright infringement and noting that they tried to resolve the issue privately before taking legal action.
This lawsuit contributes to the ongoing controversy surrounding Vultures, a project that sparked mixed reactions upon its release in early 2024. Though both Kanye and Ty Dolla $ign have hinted at a third installment of the series, the legal issues and uncertainty about the album’s release are causing delays. Now that Ty Dolla $ign has stepped back, all attention is on Kanye West, who will need to decide whether to settle or fight the accusations in court. It’s still unclear what direction he will take, but the saga surrounding the sample in “Fuk Sumn” is definitely not over.
