Toronto rapper Top5 is in the news once again. However, this time it’s not for his bars but a grim tale his scars tell. Top5 was the victim of a brutal stabbing that nearly took his life while in attendance for Drake’s headlining set at the Wireless Festival in London earlier this month. Now, he’s using social media to show off the aftermath. A raw, gnarled scar snaking down the left side of his neck.

The controversial rapper, who often causes a stir on social media, was in the U.K. to have a moment alongside Drake, his fellow Toronto native, who would take over the Wireless stage for three nights. But what was supposed to be a celebratory visit soon turned life-threatening after Top5 was assaulted on the streets of London.

During the trip, Top5 went live, boldly stating, “There are no real killers in London,” according to fans and viewers. Hours afterward, he was knifed in the neck. Many believed the comment may have led to a local response, although DJ Akademiks took to the internet to dispel any of those theories. Respectfully, it did happen in the U.K., but it’s got nothing to do with the U.K,” Akademiks said on stream. “It’s some whole other sh*t.”

Despite the surge in violence, Top5’s online image has remained unchanged. The photo of his scar, posted to his social media platforms, tells a stark story of survival and maybe even a little bit of that, because there are more dangerous things out there than rap beef and bravado. Yet his post came without an apology or regret. It was more like a badge of fortitude, a testament to his grit. The situation is the latest in a long line of questions about the distinction between rap theatrics and real-life repercussions. Top5’s scar is a message to artists who cross the line between internet talk and international territory. Whether fans consider it a wake-up call or just lip service, Top5 is online, standing tall, and still talking.
