NYC electronic duo The Knocks and Canadian electro-pop icon Dragonette have done it again with their exciting new single, “The Hero.” This track introduced listeners to the neon-streaked 1980s corporate fantasy created by their fictional tech monolith, Revelation Technologies. The second part of the vision is represented by Aquaria, the RuPaul’s Drag Race-winner muse kicking off this era.
“The Hero” takes a sweeter path, surrendering to a more laid-back but equally infectious sound. The song marvelously conveys the slow slide into the disintegration of a relationship, not through furious infidelities or dramatic farewells but via the subtle and insidious awareness that something isn’t quite right. The Knocks’ signature production, dense regions of synth, punchy percussion, and a lilt of an insistent, hypnotic groove with Dragonette’s wispy but profoundly resonant vocals perfectly reflect the emotional ambivalence and inability to commit revealed in the lyrics.
What makes ”The Hero” truly resonate is how it can turn melancholia into movement. It’s the sort of song that prompts deep thoughts as you sway underneath flashing lights, vacillating between nostalgia and a wary tomorrow. Whether you’re lost in its glistening production or examining its emotionally vulnerable message, “The Hero” proves that The Knocks and Dragonette are a fierce force in the electro-pop world.
As they move deeper into this otherworldly sonic terrain, one thing is for sure, and that is, Revelation Technologies may not be accurate, but the magic The Knocks and Dragonette conjure up definitely is. “The Hero” is a signifier of their skill in writing songs that land on both the heart and the dance floor, and we’re all in for what’s next.
