Sunderland’s band Swindled is back with their new single, “Cosmic Immigrants,” they’re making that known more than ever. Now, as the second drop from their upcoming third EP, “What A Nightmare!,” the track is a fulcrum for a group that isn’t afraid of evolution.
“Cosmic Immigrants” is suave, groovy, and stunningly confident, like stepping into a cosmic lounge bar in a far-off galaxy. The bass struts, the synths shimmer, and the vocals float with a hypnotic ease that is both familiar and foreign. This is Swindled, reconfigured, enhanced, and turned up.
Frontman Jonny Swindle describes this track as an artistic turning point. A polish here only comes from obsessive care, the detail you can’t fake. It is a departure from the more free form vibe of their debut EP, and that is precisely the point. “Cosmic Immigrants” feels like the work of a band that’s slowed down to speed up, taking the time to get it right.
Previewed live in 2023 for the first time, the track immediately resonated with fans for good reason. Live energy is hard to put in a bottle but Swindled does it with fantastic fidelity. The production’s push-pull tension reflects a sense of being grounded and adrift, alien and familiar, like catching a lift on a groove-powered spacecraft.
Swindled is claiming a sound all its own. It’s learned without being snooty or hooky without injury, a rare thing in a time when genre borders are blurred. With “What A Nightmare!” on the way, “Cosmic Immigrants” signals the arrival of a confidently steeping band in their next chapter. If this is the decisive moment, the future will shine bright and mysterious, and Swindled would want nothing less.
