With their boldest musical step, Berlin-based collective Speaking Is A Gun kicks down the genre gates with their first official rock ‘n’ roll anthem, “Nothing Ever Tasted So Good.” More than a song, it’s a sensory explosion, a messy, blissed-out hymn to infatuation, powered by breakbeats, basslines, and that unvarnished, unapologetic burst of early love.

Built upon the collected chemistry of bassist Max Prieß, drummer Damian Baran, and rhythm guitarist/vocalist Florian Begenau, the song crackles with immediacy from the opening note. Its rhythm is beautiful chaos, complex and groove-fortified, audacious yet instantly digestible, all designed to let Begenau’s rap-like vocal delivery slither around the frenzy with swagger and soul.

The song plumbs the depths of that all-consuming state of mind in which love grabs hold not just of the heart but the senses. Taste, in particular, operates as a metaphor for obsession. Suddenly, everything, including the rain and memory itself, tastes delicious. Begenau captures this romantic delirium with raw force, particularly in the track’s final moments, when taste becomes a touch and becomes almost carnal. It’s rock poetry with teeth.

Funk-flecked grooves tote notes indebted to the Chili Peppers, while your ear may even detect echoes of Chuck Berry and Little Richard ghosts lurking on the fringes somewhere in the DNA. And that 1972 Marshall 100 Lead amplifier is history tearing through. “Nothing Ever Tasted So Good” is a love-high fever dream. Speaking Is A Gun asks you to feel, taste, and possibly go a little insane. If it sounds like their first rock ‘n’ roll song turned out like this, the future might be delicious.
