R&B singer and entrepreneur Ray J has offered his two cents about one of the most publicized celebrity cases of the decade, insisting Sean “Diddy” Combs will be acquitted in his current criminal trial in New York City. As founder of Bad Boy Records, Diddy faces serious charges from federal prosecutors, including racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking, and Ray J’s loud and proud defense has only added another layer to the media circus surrounding the case.

During a recent episode of Piers Morgan Uncensored, Ray J didn’t hold back when sharing his thoughts on the prosecution’s attempts. “I personally think it’s gonna happen faster than a lot of people think,” he told the host. “Because I think we’re all starting to see what this is, even if you’re on the other side of it.” Ray J’s position emanates from his conviction that the justice system, flawed though it is, still demands hard evidence, and in his view, the prosecution hasn’t made its case. Diddy has been charged with one count of racketeering conspiracy, two counts of sex trafficking by force, fraud, or coercion, and two counts of transportation of individuals in interstate commerce to engage in prostitution. However, although the charges are serious, Ray J says the government isn’t showing a criminal racket administered by the music executive.

“I mean, the justice system is the justice system,” Ray J said. “Where does this fit?… It’s off. I don’t like it and I want to be vocal about it.” Interestingly, Ray J didn’t back down from the notion that Diddy may have dabbled in some sketchy shit before. But he is confident that the current charges do not cover that if those were his misdeeds.” I honestly think that Diddy will get out, and I think … there’s nothing here,” he said. I think they made their point. Whatever they were trying to make, your point is made. Now let Diddy out. Free Diddy!”

Such comments mirror opinions voiced by sure legal watchers of the trial. Several attorneys not involved in the case have said publicly that the prosecution’s claims still strike them as thin, particularly on the issue of whether Diddy truly occupied the eye of the criminal storm. Racketeering, a federal crime, requires evidence to establish that a crime was committed and was part of an organized effort operated under Diddy to commit other crimes. According to Ray J, that’s a high bar the prosecutors haven’t met.

Ray J’s defense of Diddy may be unexpected to some, but it is part of an ongoing dialogue in and out of the courtroom. Diddy, one of hip-hop’s most polarizing figures, straddled the line between fame and infamy for decades. But Ray J insists that this time, the case does not hold. And with the trial in progress and all eyes on the entertainment world, Ray J’s voice can have a much bigger impact than many would expect. Public opinion is for the jury to decide in the end. Only time will tell what the case holds, but Ray J holds on to his opinion that Diddy will go free.
