pyncher’s new single, “Space Rocket Simulator,” sends us rocketing through an expansive and multicolor crash course in noise, chaos, and the unexpected use of melody. It’s a wild, no-seatbelt romp through the outer orbits of garage pop with plenty of grit and charm.

pyncher’s sound is still defiantly unpolished, as if they’ve sandblasted the surface of a pop song and then welded it back together out of spare parts from a cartoon spaceship. The result is a calculatedly lopsided jam that miraculously still envelopes even while it seems poised to come apart, mid-jig, at the seams in the best possible way.

The band embraces its left-field instincts with vigor, creating a surreal soundscape that does more than bend genre expectations, it amiably melts them. Somewhere between the punchy urgency of punk and the off-kilter catchiness of lo-fi pop, pyncher found a new pocket to explore, one that’s equally heady and humorous.

There’s a wink behind every yelp and riff, a sense that Pyncher isn’t being too serious themselves, precisely what makes their chaos so addictive. It was as if a sci-fi B-movie were filmed and sent through loud, strange, and compelling speakers. “Space Rocket Simulator” isn’t trying to be perfect. It aspires to impact and gets it. With caustic noise and unfiltered energy, pyncher proves they’re here to explode.
