NERiMA, the Toronto-based punk-rock band, welcomes 2025 with an electrifying and weighty new single, “Fifty Years.” A crackling with energy but heavy with existential dread track, the song dives deep into the anxieties of long-term commitment.
“Fifty Years,” led by the band’s vocalist and bassist Lexi, reflects fear, doubt, and the nagging sense that happiness never lasts, delivered with crushing emotional honesty. The song, written by Alexi Orial and produced by Daniel Scott Bell, pairs a blistering punk sound with lyrics drenched in discomfort. Lexi explained it is a fun song sonically, but the lyrics are a huge downer. The song chronicles a character who is so sure happiness will eventually crumble that they can’t enjoy it now.
The collision between sound and subject matter hits “Fifty Years” hard. With pounding drums, gritty guitar riffs, and Lexi’s urgent vocals, the track barrels on with Old World punk urgency, but it’s grounded in deep self-awareness. It’s a head-banging anthem and a sobering confession, a perfect storm of emotional turbulence wrapped in raw, unfiltered energy.
Aside from its lyrical depth, “Fifty Years” also finds the band in bittersweet territory. It is the last with Vee on drums, who has departed the band. While their leaving certainly feels like a sea change, this track is a helluva send-off, celebrating the chemistry and passion behind NERiMA’s sound through this chapter and into the next.
