The 4x Grammy Award winner returns with a new sound, “Love in Real Life,” that promises to be the next chapter in her already storied career. The song, now streaming everywhere, is the beginning of what will undoubtedly be a blockbuster era as she prepares for her next round of LPs in 2025 with her much-anticipated fifth full-length LP.
“Love In Real Life” opens with a gentle, spoken-word intro before making way with a breezy guitar riff and a groove that is undeniably Lizzo. Her signature take-no-prisoners audacity emerges with a rock ‘n’ roll vibe that harks more to whimsy than fearlessness, brave but not brash. The track crescendos into a freewheeling, zestful chorus in which Lizzo’s signature vocals beckon us to treat ourselves to a flirty few moments.
And the music video that accompanies it, directed by Colin Tilley, is itself a visual feast. Lizzo is shown recovering from heartbreak and hanging out with pals, only for them to evaporate into a faceless mob gradually. That makes such a poignant statement about her evolution and makes it so appropriate for the song’s themes of self-love and freedom.
With “Love In Real Life,” Lizzo reminds us, once again, that she’s not afraid to turn herself inside out, creating a disheveled, rock-inflected banger without losing her trademark groove and setting the stage for what we can only assume will be an extraordinary album.
