LACOSA has returned with “Far Out,“ a compelling new single that sounds like both an exit and an entrance, a waypoint between what was and what’s ahead. Out through Dischi Soviet Studio, this new collection of work was conceived during sessions for their debut, but carries its own bold presence, filled with relentless quest and creative exploration.
“Far Out“ is really about exploration at its heart, not only geographical, but also emotional. It’s music that evokes the act of drifting toward mysterious territory, of pulling over to the uncharted shoulder to reflect, refuel, and reinvent. It’s by design transitional, as still as a placeholder amid the ongoing journey of growth and sprawl that led LACOSA from Je Sus in 2021 to the masterpiece self-titled album in late 2023.
LACOSA’s most guitar-forward work to date, “Far Out“ is dense with psych swirls and a shoegaze-like mood. It finds the band extending its sound in spiky new directions. Teutonic drum patterns collide with wispy dream-pop reverberations, and a spoken-word vocal approach, splintered and arching, leads the way into a fever dream. The British guitar tropes do shine through, but they’re refracted through a distinctly European prism, sprinkled with Oriental touches and a sense of otherworldly disconnection.
The production is as finely wrought as the songwriting itself. “Far Out“ was written by the band and played and recorded live on a late-60s Revox A77 tape recorder by guitarist Matteo Marenduzzo at Soviet Studio in Cittadella. It was then mixed and mastered by Matt Bordin at Outside Inside Studio, with a lot of analog love pulsing particularly through the dreamy layers. Everything from the distant reverbs to the muscles leaving the bones of its guitar tones feels handmade, purposeful, and enveloping.
“Far Out“ is not so much where LACOSA has been as where it’s willing to go. It’s the aural equivalent of an elusive island, surprises are printed over the untamed canvas, and it’s an inspirational island at that. As they press forward with the next chapter in their story, here they are with their latest single, serving as a poetic pause, a breath before the plunge. Whether you’re familiar with LACOSA or entering their world for the first time, “Far Out“ is a magnificently weird place to get lost.
