Kid Cudi, the rule-breaking musician who has consistently and ruthlessly broken conventions with his genre-spanning and life-reflecting artistry, is giving his fans an all-new monster. Now, on the heels of his 11th studio album, which was released on August 22, Cudi tweeted that he will be taking an extended break from making music, marking a shift in his music and career.

Free represented a daring shift in Cudi’s sound toward pop-punk and alternative influences, while also maintaining the introspective songwriting that has made him popular with fans over the years. The album has been received well, as it’s more evidence that Cudi is doing something that connects with music fans. However, after this ambitious undertaking, the Cleveland-born artist is taking a break from the studio.

Cudi shared how appreciative he is of his fans in a series of tweets recorded by Kurrco and HipHopDX, writing, “Fam!!! I just wanna say thank you to all my fans for supporting Free, spreading the word and sending love. I’m so grateful I have y’all in my corner.” He also announced that this album will be his last being associated with major record companies. “Free was my last album on a major label (which is part of the reason I called the album Free) and now I’m lookin forward to a new chapter and being independent. I’m so proud of this album and the reception it received.” The statement above lets the world know that the star is poised to set the bar higher as far as making himself an even more autonomous creative force.

For Cudi, going independent is a symbolic new beginning. Freed from the strictures of the primary label system, he can pursue new sounds, ideas, and collaborations on his own terms. While fans will have to wait longer than usual for his next studio release, the prospect of its arrival will be complete with artistic liberty. Cudi is a historically productive artist, with his most extended break between albums at three years, post-Man on the Moon, Vol. II: The Legend of Mr. Rager, and 2013’s Indicud.

The upcoming pause means that he could continue to stretch out his musical experimentation even more in his next iteration, and it has left his fans on the edge of their seats before he’s even released another album. Fans may miss the constant influx of fresh work for now, but Cudi’s announcement serves as a deft reminder of both his enduring dedication to personal growth and his creative development. Now, as he follows his own path on his own terms, away from the rigors of the primary label system, the music community can’t wait to see what the next chapter holds for the prestigious young artist.
