Indie rock trio Goddamn Wolves presents a savvy contradiction in not-so-tricky packaging with the release of “I Hate This Song,” a title as brash as the band’s progression. Straight out of Raleigh, NC, are the young buzz band to watch with this jam, reflecting their stanky alt-rock roots and modern indie rock sharpness and confirming that seven years in, they’re bigger, better, and bolder than ever.

It vibrates with energy from the first chord, the raw kind of openheartedness you can only deliver when everyone in a band is in tune. Goddamn Wolves want nothing to do with playing it safe. Instead, they’re pushing their sound in new, unexpected directions, fusing their distinct, punchy guitar riffs with intricate male/female vocal harmonies that alternate biting lines with moments of camaraderie. The result is a catchy and rebellious yell of a track.

The essence of this release is collaboration. The duo of Laura and Drew also had the infectious chorus melody and lyrics and Drew’s rhythm riff, which gave it its bite. This is a landmark in how far they’ve come creatively and together. This song takes them to places they haven’t been to yet musically and lyrically. And there’s a playfulness here intertwined with the band’s trademark intensity. Whether it’s cheeky self-references or a nod to their hometown, “I Hate This Song” is a tongue-in-cheek anthem that revels in irony.

The recording hits a perfect sweet spot of clarity and scuzz. Max Gowan recorded, mixed, and mastered it at Found After Dark Audio, the Wolves’ haven since 2023. With the band working on a vinyl LP collection, this single is a pivotal chapter in the band’s story. Goddamn Wolves can say they hate this song, but you’d be hard-pressed not to love it. It is loud, bright, and indubitably theirs, a call to arms for anybody who has ever rolled their eyes and cranked up the volume.
