Raleigh’s Goddamn Wolves once again roar into view with a charging new song, “See How It Goes.” Released as part of an A-side/B-side package with their fiery single “I Hate This Song,” the song doubles down on the trio’s established virtues of formal precision, harmonically layered vocals, and the ability to combine new and old sounds without hesitation.
With “See How It Goes,” Goddamn Wolves lead us on a different detour, one forged in a melodic architecture that contorted into something they could rightly call their own. The fingerprints of classic soul may have triggered the original chord sequence, but this is no vintage recording. The track smacks of gritty indie spirit, with the push-pull tension echoing throughout. It’s raw, unapologetic, and alive.
The song is the dramatic interplay of male and female voices, and the band’s signature sounds sharper and more compelling than ever. But that vocal disparity is not mere fashion. It becomes the emotional fare of the track, supplying “See How It Goes” with its pop and direction. There’s something refreshingly conversational about how the lines bounce between perspectives as if we’re hearing two sides of a story in real time.
Goddamn Wolves sound like a band in full stride. The chemistry is evident in the vocals, tight rhythmic pocket, and authoritative instrumental phrasing. It’s a synchronicity from years of playing, writing, and growing together.
Recorded, mixed, and mastered by the band’s longtime collaborator Max Gowan at Found After Dark Audio, the studio that’s been the band’s second home since 2023, the production on “See How It Goes” somehow manages to feel both tight and loose. It is a clean snapshot of a clearly tight band thriving in the gloriously messy in-between of structure and chaos. If “I Hate This Song” is the snarl, “See How It Goes” is the smirk, a potent reminder that Goddamn Wolves know what in the hell they’re doing, and they’re having a hell of a time doing it.
