JUNO Award-winning songwriter Donovan Woods returns with the gorgeous “How Good,” a track that surrounds you like the warmest hug. Tender and sparing but wrenching, the piano ballad finds Woods at his most raw and contemplative.
Co-written with hitmaker Steve Robson (James Blunt, Miley Cyrus, Maisie Peters), “How Good” came from a piece of Woods’ life close to his heart. Written as a lullaby for himself and his wife during a challenging year, the song brims with mild optimism, an almost childlike conviction that, no matter what, love is an unyielding comfort. Woods explained that the song describes a way of looking at the world that’s naive. “How Good” invites us to stop, breathe, and lean toward the fundamental reassuring truths that carry us through challenging times.
“How Good” continues to push Woods further away from his folk roots while straddling various pop and country aspects that have made him one of his generation’s most respected songwriters. The spare arrangement draws out the raw sensitivity of his voice, such that each note hits with weight and purpose. Even as his music ventures into new terrain, he has a gift for creating deep songs. Donovan Woods soothes, reassures, and reminds us that love remains a soft place to land even at life’s most percussive extremes.
