On his new single, “What Are You Waiting For,” the emerging American singer-songwriter d4vd looks back to the visceral creative exuberance that made him a name in the first place. Written alongside Tyler Spry, who also produced the track, it is the fourth single from his much-anticipated debut album, “WITHERED,” which will be released on April 25, 2025.
It was conceived in the wee hours of a hotel room in Japan, summoning the feeling of inspiration hitting at just the right time. The song came to d4vd, who told Jack Saunders the beat arrived from the U.S. while he was in Japan and instantly got his creative wheels turning. Staring out the window in Shibuya, beset by the pure beauty of the city, he felt the urge to lean back into what he calls his older sound.
That sort of spontaneous magic suffuses “What Are You Waiting For,” a track that crackles with urgency, yearning, and the emotionally rich melodies that make up d4vd’s best work. It’s a love letter to his history yet a harbinger of what the upcoming album, “WITHERED,” entails and sonically represents an oncoming wave of the messiest feelings love can bring, as the love found, lost, created, and obliterated.
With each new release, d4vd repeatedly proves why he’s become one of the most exciting new voices in alternative pop. If “What Are You Waiting For” is anything to go by, “WITHERED” will be a gut punch worth every second spent delivering it.
