“Totality” by Burn The Blight is an unapologetic dive into the dark, beautiful abyss of the future, a song which, once played, releases your arms, leaving you no choice but to reach out for more. Dizziedrums, based in the chilly clime of Tampere, Finland, but hailing from locations near and far, is hardly a snow-blown group musically. Featuring two brothers already well-versed in manipulation, being the sole members of Novembersoundsbetter, Shadows of Fire takes their base DNA and sparks it off on a journey into the unknown from the shadows unto darkness and sound.
At the heart of “Totality” is an audacious goal to fuse strands of metal that don’t cohere while shifting shape. And that’s precisely what Burn The Blight does. Roope, the band’s main guitarist and composer, writes riffs as fragile as they are pummeling, weaving melodious post-rock layers with explosive blasts of blackened death metal ferocity. It sounds like a slow-motion storm, with moments of eerie calm ceding to cataclysmic crescendoes.
The vocal delivery and production work by Santtu put the song even higher. There’s something raw and sincere about how his voice slices through the thick instrumentation, abrasive and incredibly human. His influence on the band’s visual and lyrical aesthetic is clearly felt. “Totality” looks and feels like the complete package. Every detail is intentional, every scream and silence part of a larger story about collapse, change, and survival.
Burn The Blight stands out in their attack, all-comers genre-hopping. Deafheaven and Gaerea are felt in the atmosphere and mood, but “Totality“ never feels imitative. It’s a dialogue, in other words, a tug-of-war between light and dark, chaos and order. Shadows of Paradise Lost and Ghost Brigade reside in the melancholic edges of the track, and God Is An Astronaut’s swooning ambiance impregnates its airborne moments.
In the end, “Totality“ is a statement. With this release, they confirm themselves as a powerful presence in the turbulent terrain of contemporary metal. For those courageous enough to peer into the abyss, “Totality“ is dazzling.
