Melbourne genre-bending alt-rock quartet One More Weekend gets lost in the dark with the release of their sinister new song, “Aunty Meredith,” a brooding track that teeters on the line between rebellion and demise. Raw, sea-soaked, and insatiably introspective, this song is more about what you actually have than what you actually get when the party ends.

“Aunty Meredith” envelops you in a hypnotic haze from the opening note, snuggling you right into a high that’s equal parts euphoric and treacherous. But this is an emotional unraveling wrapped in sludgy guitar licks and evocative vocals. Lead singer Connor Dougan directs us through the madness with intensity and openness, addressing a self that’s too immediate to avoid.

“This one’s about that thin line between freedom and losing control,” Connor says, and you can hear that line getting walked, tripped across, and ultimately blown to smithereens as the track escalates. The song has a theatrical, cinematic structure. It’s as though you’re watching a slow-burning film where the hero suddenly realizes that the villain has been the one staring back in the mirror the entire time.

As the melody throbs and writhes, “Aunty Meredith” gains a fever-dream edge. There’s a sense of spiraling that you’ve danced too long, gone too deep, and now the high is turning on you. And in the rare instances when the music ebbs, the silence is deafening, a mirror reflecting back a fractured self.

One More Weekend has never been a group to play it safe, and here, they’ve made a bold tune that dares to knock away the escapism. “Aunty Meredith” is an experience, an assault, an evening you may not return to quite the same. In a sea of songs that water down the dark, One More Weekend leans into it. “Aunty Meredith” may even be their most audacious and straightforward work yet.
