Arvie’s newest single, “The Walls Have Ears,” is a quietly brave statement covered in dreamy indie-pop sounds. In the first few seconds, Arvie constructs a hushed intimacy that feels like you’re sitting in a very still room where every thought resounds slightly too loudly.
The song straddles the line between fragility and power. It begins with a delicate pop-indie feel, layered vocals, lean beats, and woeful chords, and it gathers ruthlessly from there. The guitar solo rips the covering off of the song’s internal tension. It’s almost as if Arvie employs the solo to scream the things she never wants out of her mouth.
Beneath this music’s gentle melodies and feather-light vocals is a theme that is especially powerful in a world where mental health is far too often still tiptoed around. Inspired by Suzanne Young’s book The Program, this track dares you to feel.
“The Walls Have Ears” exemplifies the paradox of many people’s experience of wanting to be heard but fearing the implications of letting the walls down. The lyrics from Arvie that open the track reflect that internal push and pull but make a songwriting leap into that unspoken thing we’re all thinking/feeling when we’re alone. “The Walls Have Ears” is gentle but sturdy evidence that even silence has a sound, and sometimes, the most courageous thing we can do is shatter it.
