At a time when love songs seem to get lost in the shiny surface of things, Tanzanian-born, Newfoundland-based singer-songwriter ANIL gives us something refreshingly raw with an acoustic rendering of her debut single, “For You (Acoustic).” More than a remix, this is a total emotional reimagining. In place of the punchy Afro-pop, the edges of the original are something far more raw and heartfelt. ANIL’s acoustic version gently pulls at the soul like a hand-written love letter read by the light of a few candles.

There’s an irrefutable warmth in ANIL’s voice. It’s intimate, like she’s not so much singing about love as through it. Her voice is light, airy yet grounded, and it soars above the spare base of acoustic strings and laid-back Afrobeat-inspired rhythms. The producers Derick Kwame and Martin Ojapah impressively hold back here, giving as much punctuation to the space between the sounds as to the music itself.

“For You taps into that universally human ripple of new love when every text seems like poetry and every look leads to wonder. The stripped-down execution transforms what could have been a jingle-worthy love song into a daydream for the romantics and the heartsick. The groove is lean but present, flexing nods to ANIL’s Afrobeat roots while settling comfortably in the chill love song or alt-R&B universe. There’s a timeless quality to this acoustic rendition. It doesn’t push too hard, and that’s what makes it charming. ANIL is expressing a feeling, and it’s that openness that makes “For You (Acoustic) so special.

With this release, ANIL establishes herself as more than just an emerging voice in Afro-pop. She’s a songwriter with the rare gift of emotional honesty and simplicity. “For You (Acoustic) is suitable for your late-night playlists, lazy Sunday soundtracks, and any time that falling in love feels like a new discovery. This song whispers, and so you lean in. And when you do, you’ll want to stick around.
