Andrea Pizzo and The Purple Mice have one of their most bittersweet moments yet in “Goodbye,” a song that feels like both a farewell and a warm hug. Lifted from their concept album “Transhumanity,” this one is a solemn, quiet turning point as the band swaps out cosmic exploration for something altogether more human and personal.

“Goodbye” is a cross-era, cross-emotion song musically. It pulls up with the hushed, inward-leaning sweetness of old-fashioned folk-pop before gradually syncing itself to more contemporary electropop terms resembling Air, or The Postal Service. The vocals reflect the passage of time and yearning toward some kinder past, and being convinced they’ll see better days ahead, suggesting how past and future can coexist.

For as much of a concept album as “Transhumanity” is, which often turns its gaze heavenward, “Goodbye” grounds the narrative in something very Earthbound. It’s the point where technology gets tender and human feeling outstrips the machine.

And even in the long run, “Goodbye” is a meditative cinematic act on memory, change, and the always classic requirement to move on gracefully. It’s a tale as old as time, but Andrea Pizzo and The Purple Mice tell it well. Even in the future, there is still nothing more powerful than saying goodbye from the heart.
