New Zealand’s Alba Rose returns with a song like stepping into the light after a long, cold night. Her new single, “Sunshine,” is a hug, a warm wind promising renewal. With stuttering percussion, a driving bassline, and thick harmonic layers, Alba masterfully encapsulates the sensation of casting off the shackles of what was and embracing the prospect of a better tomorrow.

Hailing from deep within the Southern Alps, Alba Rose has been bringing her soulful voice and intimate songwriting to the forefront. “Sunshine” is the next step in that artistic evolution and the lead single from her sophomore EP, “First Light.” The six-track collection captures a transition period, paralleling Alba’s process of healing and self-discovery.

Born of heartbreak, “Sunshine” began with me speaking into a voice memo, an unmixed, unmastered torrent of feeling captured in my silent room. But as with the journey it symbolizes, the song grew much more significant. It began taking shape at a songwriting retreat in Nelson with the producer Allister Meffan and ultimately formed into a shimmering testament to resilience and fresh joy.

The uplifting energy of the track is rooted in artists like Lianne La Havas, Cleo Sol, and Alice Phoebe Lou, people capable of weaving strands of soul, indie, and folk into something powerful. With “Sunshine,” Alba Rose does just that, creating a song that allows listeners to return to a place of warmth and potential.

Alba’s knack for taking personal moments and making them universal experiences makes her music compelling. “Sunshine” is not just about the search for warmth in the outer world but also about finding the blaze again that’s been dimmed inside you, your capacity for joy, the newness of changes, and the endless prospect of fresh starts. With “Sunshine,” Alba Rose invites listeners to find their moment of transformation. It’s a song that hangs in the air, like the last golden beams of daylight, reminding us that no matter how long the night, the sun always comes up.
