In an incredible mashup of comedy and hip-hop, Adam Sandler has confirmed how Eminem ended up making an incredibly brief but memorable cameo in Happy Gilmore 2, released on Netflix last week. The unlikely duo has fans buzzing, and the story behind it is as entertaining as the cameo itself.

Sandler recently stopped by The Dan Patrick Show to help promote the sequel to his 1996 golf comedy classic and, while there, took some time reflecting on how that Eminem moment came together. The comedy legend explained that it actually began as a joke among the cast about how perfect Eminem would be for one of the silly, small parts. But for Sandler, it wasn’t so easy to reach out. “I love Eminem. I’m friends with Eminem, but I don’t want to bother the man.” Sandler confessed. “And everybody kept saying, ‘Man, Eminem would be so funny in this part.'” Under pressure, he hesitated because this is how cagey and private Marshall Mathers has been about his time.

Eventually, Sandler relented and made the call himself. “Let me bug Marshall and give him a call and say, ‘Dude, I know it’s a pain in the a—, but it’s pretty funny. You mind shooting out to us for a day?” As it happened, Eminem was more than game, and the rest is streaming history. In Happy Gilmore 2, Eminem appears as the son of Donald, a famous heckler from the first film, played by the late Joe Flaherty. The rapper’s brief appearance is both an homage and a sly nod to the original movie’s most chaotic moment on the golf course, serving up nostalgia with surprising star power.

Sandler also talked about hanging out with Eminem for the first time back in 1999 at an SNL afterparty. “And I was at a table with all my guys and he was the musical guest with [Dr. Dre] and we were at the afterparty.” Sandler recounted his recollection of how it all unfolded. “Marshall walked by our table and he looked at me and I looked at him like, ‘Oh yeah, that kid’s pretty damn cool.’ And then he goes ‘Bobby Boucher! I go, ‘Oh yes, that’s what’s up, Marshall.’ And then we became friendly after that.” Their friendship has officially come full circle with a crossover cameo that intertwines two pop culture juggernauts in the most unlikely way conceivable.
