Stephan Folkes, a Singer, songwriter, producer, and sound engineer, is back with the ultimate and final version of his excellent single “Somebody Out There?.” Already championed on the airwaves, on playlists and music blogs in its initial guise, this new masterpiece, which showcases Folkes at his most polished yet, is a realised track that combines exploration with gripping narrative.
“Somebody Out There?” tells the tale of a group of British friends who set out to explore an abandoned building with a Ouija board, only to come face-to-face with something far more sinister. Folkes transforms this eerie tale into an atmospheric soundscape, built around strains of alternative indie rock and flourishes of R&B, soul, and dream pop. The effect is simultaneously seductive and unsettling, a song that sits with you long.
Folkes’s gritty vocal performance is full of emotion, dragging his guts over hooks, while at the same time his production layers create some dusky cinematic shit that builds a cascading world of otherworldly reality that draws you in. It is a driver that brings you into its world and does not want to let you out.
The UK up-and-comer has poured £10,000 into his debut effort, and if “Somebody Out There?” is any indication, he’s constructing immersive environments for fans of alternative indie who like things draped in shadows and steeped in the most human sounds of all.
